Designing for vehicle display

A vehicle terminal has to survive a power system that is genuinely hostile — load dump, cold crank, reverse polarity — while staying readable in direct sunlight and legible at -30 °C. The electrical design matters more than the processor choice.

Design Challenges

What usually goes wrong — and how we handle it

Hostile vehicle power Load dump transients, cold-crank dips to 6 V and reverse-polarity events during service. ISO 7637-2 and ISO 16750-2 compliant front end with 9-36 V input, ignition sense, controlled shutdown and supercapacitor ride-through.
Sunlight readability Operators work in open cabs with direct sun on the screen. 1000-1500 cd/m2 optically bonded displays with AR coating and automatic ambient dimming down to night levels.
Temperature extremes Cabs reach +80 °C in summer sun and -30 °C on winter starts. Wide-temperature panels with heater film for cold start, -40 °C rated components and validated thermal derating curves.
Vehicle network integration J1939, CANopen and OBD-II coexisting with a modern telematics uplink. Dual CAN-FD with J1939 stack, 4G/5G modem, GNSS with dead reckoning, and accelerometer-based driving-event detection.

Agricultural machinery terminal
